A Hornbook, A Fraktur And A Giveaway...

A Hornbook, A Fraktur And A Giveaway - ThreeSheepStudio.com

HORNBOOK:
A child's primer consisting of a sheet of parchment, vellum
or paper, mounted on wood, bone, leather or stone
and protected by a sheet of transparent horn.
The parchment paper displayed the alphabet,
vowels, religious materials, etc.
The frame often had a handle,
enabling the child to grasp the primer.
Circa 1595 or possibly earlier.

'A Mother's Watch' punchneedle design - an adaptation of an '1800' Fraktur

My newest release, 'A Mother's Watch',
is a punch needle design mounted on a hornbook.
I painted the hornbook a shade found in the wing of the bird
and gave it a 'finish' by hand applying wax.
(To learn more about using wax, go to
Aging With Wax.)

Reproduction Hornbooks are beautiful
to use in finishing projects.  I purchased
this Hornbook from Tara at Perfect Prim Punch.
She was willing to work with my specifications
and created exactly what I needed
to finish my project.
Tara has beautiful hornbooks to choose from.
(In fact, it will be hard to choose only one !)
Tara was delightful to work with and my perfect
hornbook arrived promptly !

'A Mother's Watch' punchneedle design - an adaptation of an '1800' Fraktur

This punch needle design is an adaptation of a Fraktur,
dated '1800'.  The Artist is documented as unknown.
I made every attempt to keep the various hues
and shading accurate to the original 1800 Fraktur.
Valdani Perle Cotton was used in this design,
however a conversion for DMC floss is included with pattern.
Now available in my Studio...

  13. What an amazing find, and such generosity on your part to give us this great opportunity. I'd never heard of hornbooks before. I think I've only ever known about prairie schools using slates and chalk. I love birds, and my yard is dedicated to gardening for birds, butterflies, and bees. How stunning this would look hanging next to the window looking out onto my garden. Keeping my fingers crossed! :)
