Ruching...
particularly Wool Ruching has been
my 'go to' for 'finishing' some
of my Punch Needle projects.
As in this case, a small pillow.
So simple...
want to learn how ??

Gather your supplies and
lets get started...

You will need wool fabric of your choice,
a sharp scissors, sharp needle
and floss in a shade that matches
the wool used for Ruching.
(I am using Dark thread for demonstration only,
so that you can easily see my stitches.)

Either new or repurposed wool fabric
can be used.  Wool fabric needs to be 'felted'
before using, this tightens the wool
and limits fraying.

You will need a total of approximately
2 and 1/2 yards x 3/4 inch of wool stripping
for a small pillow approximately 7.5 in. x 7 in.
If needed, you can use several
smaller strips sewn together to form
the 2 and 1/2 yards.
(Yardage needed varies based on size of item
and also how tightly or relaxed you prefer
your Ruching.)

If you want a 'clean' edge (as pictured)
on the wool strip, then you will cut
the strips by hand.  If you want a slightly
fuzzy edge (not as clean),
then you may tear the wool to desired size.

Using 2 strands of DMC, or similar thread,
to match wool strip -
tack under one edge of wool edge.
Begin stitching a wide spread 'zig zag' stitch.

One 'zig zag' on top of strip,
second half of 'zig zag' will show on back
of wool strip.

This will be gathered as you continue to stitch
a running 'zig zag'.

You will adjust the tightness of the Ruching
when it is sewn onto project.

Continue with the 'zig zag' stitch,
gathering the wool as you go.

Using 3 strands of DMC, or similar thread,
to match wool strip -
Begin tacking Ruching into place on pillow edge.
Tack between gathered folds,
at approximately 1/2 inch intervals,
as you move around the pillow edge.
Adjust gathers to your liking,
as you place each stitch.
You may opt for a tightly Ruched wool strip
or a more relaxed Ruching.

When you have covered all edges
in Ruching, turn under strip edge and
nestle within folds and
tack into place.

Ruching, whether wool or ribbon,
isn't just for pillows.  It can be
applied to edges of pin cushions, needlekeepers,
edge of punch needle itself, mats,
table runners or can be used
to embellish your projects
in other creative ways.

Enjoy some creative stitching, my Friends...
