Adding A Smidge Of Yellow...

There were a few projects that I wanted to

complete before the Porchwalk, 

but did not quite make it.

The Licorice Penny Rug was one 

of those projects...

so I took another look at it 

and decided it needed just a tad of color.

I used a quarter to cut my wool pennies.

A pale yellow wool will do.

Blanket stitched the single pennies in place.

I decided on a simple Sheaf stitch 

in the center of each golden wool penny.

Just have to add the backing.

I'm coming to the end of this 

very good book.

Everyone has necessary endings,

as they go through the seasons of life.

How well we navigate those endings

determines how well we do,

moving forward.

Wooly Table Runner...

This was the week to finish the Penny Runner.

I really wanted it on my table for the holidays.

I decided to give it some black accents...
and a black background.

I'm very fond of this black wool -

the finest black wool I have found.
It's from Dorr Mill.  (Black Dorr Wool) 

I've been using their black wool
 for many years and love 
the weight and softness.

I finished the black background with a self binding.

Next on the list was coasters.

I love the look of wooly coasters on the D.R. table.

One side is striped the other is solid black.

Ready for holiday gatherings.

Wool Pennies...

Have you ever changed something in your house 

and it led to another change and another change ?

I purchased a very simple 

oil-rubbed bronze (actually black) candle chandelier 

for our dining room.

I'm loving it...

but, now I need to cover the seats on the

shawl back chairs...

and make a new table runner for our 

Shaker Table, which is very long and narrow.

All this before Christmas ????

I don't think so,

but, I have started a long wool table runner.

Lots, (did I mention, LOTS)

of wool pennies to cut out.

I like seeing stacks of wool pennies...

like candy on display !

The nights have been crispy cold here in PA.

Winter is taking hold.

I've been enjoying passing the frigid evenings 

with a steaming cup of warm chai tea

and stitching pennies.

A relaxing way to end the day.

Many, many pennies...

wool pennies in my sleep !

This particular Penny runner measures

41 inches x 9 inches.
I still have a few more details to add
before I'm finished.

It seems cold and snow is covering about half

of the USA.  Stay warm and safe, 

if you are in this snow zone...

Addicted To Wool Pennies...

completely addicting !

Once I start cutting, 

I just cannot stop...

I've mentioned before, the method I use for cutting 
wool pennies, but in case you missed it...

Once I start cutting, I will usually cut until 

I cannot cut anymore and then I will store 

the wool pennies in bags according to sizes.

Then when I need them, I don't have to cut...

I just pull out what I need for a project.

I like all kinds...

brights, black and white, neutrals, primitive...

(Houndstooth makes me swoon !).

I always cut my wool pennies by hand,

they may not be perfect,

but that just adds to their charm !

Textures and solids mixed on 

a beautiful honeycomb wool.

I am working on some Cupboard Tucks

and Pincushions.

I just planted this beautiful "Mothers Day"

gift in my garden.  I love Hydrangeas, but 

they don't always love me back !

If anyone has any tips for growing them,

I would love to hear !!

Penny Rug Christmas Stocking...

Rustic colors of wool, hand cut into Pennies...
most of the wool hand dyed.

This is one of my favorite Christmas Stockings.

Each grouping of Pennies is topped with a repurposed button from my Button Jar.

This stocking was fun and easy to make. 
It is 100% wool, front and back and is 
all hand work - a sewing machine was not used.

This Penny Rug Christmas Stocking has a rustic traditional charm 
that is perfect for my son - Vince.

This is a contemporary twist on an old time favorite.

I have cut the pennies by hand and applied them with a Blanket Stitch 
on a Fine Black wool background.

The base is a Midnight Houndstooth wool.

I have finished the Penny Rug with a Pulled Thread edge.



Penny Rug Mat...

"Penny" refers to a round circle of wool,

traditionally cut using coins or a "penny" as a template.

These circles were a wonderful way to use scraps of wool

to "make something from nothing".



These Penny Rugs measure 7.5in. (19.05cm) round.

Penny Rugs can be used as candle mats or as a "coaster"

to set your mug of coffee or hot chocolate on, as shown...

When working with wool, I save all of my "scraps", even the very small pieces, and store them in a box.  Scraps are perfect for making penny rugs, because even those very small pieces can be made into pennies.

I cannot resist Penny Rugs !

So easy to make and they are packed with Old World Charm.



This Penny Rug Table Runner measures

31in. long x 12in. wide (78.74cm x 30.48cm)

and is made from 100% wool fabric.

The Pennies have been hand cut and applied with a blanket stitch.  These Penny Rugs have been finished with a Pulled Thread edge.

I like to match my embroidery floss to the color of the wool being used, however you can also use a contrasting floss color throughout the project.

I will often use all sorts of coins and small lids as my templates when working with wool pennies, to achieve the different sizes.  Baby food jar lids are often perfect for the larger "penny".  For this project, I added small glass seed beads to the center of each penny.

On this Penny Mat, I used the same shade of embroidery floss throughout the project.  I often prefer to match my color of floss to the color of wool, depending on the project design.  This Penny Mat measures 16.5in. x 10.75in. (42.55cm x 27.30cm), perfect for a place setting at a table. 



Wool Rug Hooking...Chair Pad

Hand Hooked Wool Chair Pad


I hooked this rug in a design to resemble a Penny Rug.  While I love to hand dye wool, this rug uses very little hand dyed wool.  It achieves it's depth from beautiful textured wool, straight from the bolt.

This Rug Hooking has been hooked with a #8 cut wool on Scottish Burlap.  The edge of the rug has been finished with a whipped edge, using wool yarn over a cotton cording to provide an attractive and durable edge.

Wool Rug Hooking, with proper care, can provide a lifetime of beauty... and beyond.  It truly is hand work that can be passed through the generations !

When I complete a Rug Hooking, I embroider a tag to be placed on the back.  The tag gives details about the rug - the name of the rug, my name, date and town with state.
