How To Make A Yo-Yo...

Yo-Yo Quilt

Yo-Yos make beautiful Wall Hangings, Quilts, Pillows,
Table Runners / Mats, Tote Bags, etc.
A Sewing Machine is not needed !

This project is very portable...
I place the cut out fabric pieces, spool of thread, needle and scissor in a tin and take it with me everywhere - working on Yo-Yos during sporting events, sitting in waiting rooms, etc.

Supplies

Materials Needed:
  • New or repurposed cotton fabric of your choice.  (Small prints or solids work nicely.)
  • Spool of cotton covered polyester thread.  (Can match colors of fabric or use dark thread for dark fabric / light thread for light fabric.)
  • Needle
  • Scissor
  • Small plate or plastic lid from a margarine tub or plastic lid from a whipped topping container to use as a template.  (The smaller the template - the smaller in diameter the completed Yo-Yo will be.)

Step 1

Step 1 - Using a plate or a plastic lid as a template - Position the template on the wrong side of fabric and with a pen, trace around plastic template.
Cut out circle from fabric.

Step 2

Step 2 - With wrong side of fabric facing you - use fingers to fold fabric edge in approximately 1/4 inch or slightly less.
Sew a loose running stitch as you fold raw edge under.  (Thru both layers.)

Step 3

Step 3 - When you have sewn around edge - Pull thread snugly to gather top closed. Once top is cinched closed, knot securely.

(I will usually tie two or three knots, after cinching center closed.  I have come across many antique Yo-Yo quilts and often will find the "centers" have come undone with time.)

Step 4

Step 4 - Smooth with fingers to form a round Yo-Yo.

Step 5

Step 5 - Place 2 Yo-Yos right sides together.  Whip stitch the two sides together - just on edge, approximately 1/2 inch.  Gathered opening of Yo-Yo is the front.

 Step 6

Step 6 - Repeat to connect Yo-Yos to achieve desired size.

This is a great way to use scraps of fabric, new fabric or repurposed fabric !
