I am always looking for interesting pincushions...
when I saw the Eight pointed Civil War pincushion,
I knew right away it would be perfect in wool.
This is a fairly large pincushion,
measuring 'tip to tip' 8.5 inches,
all handwork, using Valdani Perle Cotton
and felted wool fabric.

and is topped with wool pennies.

It is filled with crushed walnut shells,
although in the early 1800's it would have been
filled with Buckshot, which was widely available.
This pincushion will be put to good use.
It is large enough to hold...
lots of glass headed pins (which I collect),
all different needles (I like to leave some threaded),
and little embroidered bits and doo-dads
that I just can't seem to throw out.

OMG, absolutely stunning!!!! Do you make them to sell at craft shows? Love the wool you chose too.

I've had the pattern to make this for years Rose, but have never been able to decide what fabric to make it with. Your wool version is perfect! Love the pennies on top - I think the pattern shows a button? Anyway - thanks for stitching it up and sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteI love this Rose. It turned out so nice. I do like making pincushions. I have a pattern but have never made one. Buckshot would be interesting filler. I like walnut shells. I think my favorite are wool snips from my rugs. I never knew that about the buckshot.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are having a nice week making new things.
I have a similar pattern and just love this style. Beautifully finished!
ReplyDeleteLovely, show of the wool nicely.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely and unique pin cushion! You create so many pretty things, it's such a joy to see them all.
